I have shopped here for about 15 years. It is conveniently located near the Porter Square red line train station and has lots of parking. Because it is a busy location as part of a larger commercial center, it lacks the feel and helpfulness of a local hardware store. It is overpriced as you are paying for the convenience. (Blue painters' tape can cost as much as $2 more per roll.) The owner is well-intentioned, but when I mentioned to her that I had to throw away 7 potted house plants because the soil I added to them from her store was laced with fly eggs, she had no response. How about an apology or a store credit? The store offers a discount for teachers and students. I am a teacher, but I was once told by a cashier that I couldn't get the discount. Here is a synopsis: Hardworking Teacher: I am a teacher, so please give me the discount. Cashier: Where do you teach? Hardworking Teacher: A language school in Davis Square. Here is my ID. Cashier: Oh, the discount is only for Massachusetts teachers. Hardworking Teacher: What does "Massachusetts teacher" mean? I teach in Massachusetts. Cashier: I mean "Massachusetts public school teachers." Hardworking Teacher: Oh, Massachusetts, as a state, does not have public schools, unless, perhaps, you are referring to the UMASS system. Or, do you mean the public schools of all the cities in the state? Cashier: Yes. Hardworking Teacher: "Yes," what? Which one is it? Two of my Taiwanese students happened to be there. We had just had class that Friday morning and they had popped in the store after having had lunch next door. It was horrific, to say the least, that there was a discussion about how "I was not a teacher" right in front of them. (A Moroccan student of mine used to work there as well, BTW. So, yes, I am a teacher. I don't know what else you need.) I got the discount, but what the hell? Good retraining opportunity.

Won't check stock levels if you call ahead and then you waste the trip to go there because it's not in stock (happened twice to me). Long lines. No-knowledge employees means you can't ask for advice. Take the time to drive to home Depot.
